2013 Scion FR-S: First Look

by

Driving excitement at 30 mpg.

Here’s a first look at the latest Ride of the Week, the 2013 Scion FR-S.

Jointly developed by Subaru and Toyota, Scion’s parent company, the FR-S is a small, 2+2 sports car that arrived this year as an all-new 2013 model. Except for some styling details, it’s identical to the Subaru BRZ. The name “FR-S” stands for “Front-engine, Rear-drive Sport.” And sporty it is, both in its appearance and its driving dynamics.

The FR-S is not a terrifically powerful automobile. It’s more on par with a Mazda Miata than with a Nissan Z or a Hyundai Genesis Coupe. But with a 200-horsepower 2.0-liter flat-four mounted low in its taut chassis, the FR-S is built for tight handling and good acceleration. It’s relatively inexpensive and fuel-efficient, too. Base price with a 6-speed manual transmission is $24,200, while an optional 6-speed automatic adds $1,100 to the bottom line. The two-pedal FR-S is EPA-rated at an impressive 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. The manual-equipped model is rated at 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

Beyond the choice of transmissions, the 2013 Scion FR-S comes with typical convenience equipment but not a lot of frills. LED taillights, 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, power windows, a leather-wrapped tilt/telescope steering wheel and an 8-speaker Pioneer audio system with Bluetooth and USB/aux inputs are all standard. Our test vehicle is equipped with the automatic, but does not include any available stand-alone options like fog lamps, premium audio or lowering suspension. With the automatic transmission and including the destination charge, the total price on the test car’s window sticker is $26,085.
