2013 Infiniti M56: First Look

by

2013 Infiniti M56Here’s a first look at the latest ride of the week, the 2013 Infiniti M56 Sport.

Infiniti just announced it will change its model nomenclature for the 2014 model year, so this will be the last model with the M56 designation. Next year, we’ll see the M line of large luxury sedans sold as the 2014 Infiniti Q70.

The current M lineup includes V6- and V8-powered models available with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. There’s also a hybrid; the rear-drive only M35h is the only gasoline-electric vehicle in Infiniti’s current model range. The M37 gets a 3.7-liter V6 good for 330 horsepower and has a starting price of $48,600. With a 420-horsepower 5.6-liter V8, the M56 starts at $61,100. Both the M37 and M56 get a standard 7-speed automatic transmission.

Even without extra-cost options, the M is plush. A sunroof, a proximity key with push-button start, automatic xenon headlights and automatic wipers are standard. So are Bluetooth handsfree, dual-zone automatic climate control and a backup camera. Leather seats include 10-way power adjustable heated front seats with memory functions linked to the keys.

The test car includes a couple options packages that add significantly to the bottom line but also provide cutting-edge content. Infiniti’s Technology package – priced at $3,050 for all M models – includes a range of driver assistance programs like active blind spot and lane departure features that can intervene to prevent a collision. Adaptive cruise control with Infiniti’s sophisticated Distance Control Assist (DCA) allows the driver to set a speed and leave it. If heavy traffic prevents the car from reaching the intended speed, the DCA and adapative cruise will maintain a safe speed and distance, then accelerate back up to the intended speed when the roadway is clear. Adaptive lighting that angles the headlights in turns is also part of the tech package.

The cost of the Sport package varies depending on model. For the rear-drive M56, it tacks on an extra $5,650. For the premium, buyers get 20-inch wheels with summer tires, a sportier front fascia, active rear steering, sport brakes, sportier suspension tuning. Interior equipment upgrades include magnesium paddle shifters, aluminum pedals, a 16-speaker Bose audio system and sport seats, steering wheel and shift knob. Sport models also get Infiniti’s Forest Air system and a power rear sunshade.

With options, the 2013 Infiniti M56 Sport with Technology package is priced at $70,195 including an $895 destination charge.
