The eightieth running of the world’s premier endurance automobile racing event will include two prototype sports cars using hybrid technology. Back in 2006, Audi brought diesel-powered rigs to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and has enjoyed great success with these TDI cars. In fact, Audi has taken ten Le Mans victories since 2000.
Tossing a couple hybrid vehicles into such an important race could mark a turning point for motorsport. In the past, automotive technology has typically moved from the track to the street. Electrification appears to be taking a different course. Hybrids at Le Mans could swing the door wide open for greater inclusion of electric technology in racing. While the technology has been allowed at Le Mans since 2009, only since 2010 could hybrids compete for points. Toyota will also premier a hybrid prototype car this year.
Look for the hybrid cars numbered 1 and 2 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this June.
