After reading Nick Palermo’s comments about the 2013 Toyota Avalon on autotrader.com, I have a couple of questions. What did you mean when you said the 2013 Avalon “promises sportier driving dynamics?” Do you think the steering will be tighter and the ride firmer? Since we like a looser feel to the steering wheel and a nice, soft luxurious ride, would we be better off buying a 2012 Toyota Avalon? Also, is it true that there will be no reclining rear seats? And where will the front license plate go on the 2013? Overall the 2013 sounds like a wonderful car, but firmer steering and harder ride might be deal breakers. Please comment. Thanks.

Thanks for your questions, Lyn. Auto shows don’t typically include a chance to drive new vehicles, so my reporting on characteristics like ride quality are based on information provided by Toyota. However, higher spring rates do indicate a firmer ride. How much firmer will it be? I won’t know until I have a chance to drive it. As far as steering, I wouldn’t expect heavy steering in the 2013 Avalon. I suspect that the steering might “weight up” at higher speeds, but that it would be light and easy at lower speeds, like maneuvering in a parking lot.
Regarding the availability of a reclining rear seat, the feature was not mentioned in the press release for the NY show, but it may be available.
I see why you ask about the front license plate. I’m guessing a bracket will allow it to mount forward of the lower grille.
I’ve reached out to Toyota product communications in an effort to answer your questions. I’ll let you know as soon as I hear back.

Today I spoke to Toyota’s National Manager for Communications, hoping to answer your questions. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until more information is available, but he hinted that we might see some soon. He also said that the 2013 Avalon should arrive late in November. Journalists typically get a chance to drive a new vehicle for the first time before the first cars hit showrooms, so you can expect to see the first reviews this fall. I’ll provide more information to you as soon as possible. Thanks!
