2013 Honda Accord EX: First Look

by

Here’s a first look at the latest Ride of the Week, the 2013 Honda Accord EX.

Now in its ninth generation the latest Accord is completely redesigned with new features and styling, a new direct-injection four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission (CVT), the first of its kind for Honda’s popular midsize vehicle. Accord continues to be offered in both coupe and sedan variants. Although the 2013 Accord is smaller on the outside than the outgoing model, most interior dimensions are the same or better. A notable exception is front and rear headroom; the tallest drivers may feel more squeezed in the new car.

But along with lighter weight and the new drivetrain, the 2013 Accord’s tidy package contributes to improved fuel economy. With Honda’s Earth Dreams 2.4-liter engine, the test car is EPA-rated at 27 mpg city and 36 mpg highway.

A wide variety of models are included in the 2013 Honda Accord lineup. Sedans are available in base LX trim with a six-speed manual transmission and a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $21,680. The CVT is optional on the LX and mid-range Sport and EX models. The pricier and better equipped Accord EX-L includes the CVT as standard equipment. Buyers can also choose a 278-horsepower V6 for the EX-L. It comes standard with a conventional six-speed automatic transmission. Finally, the top-trim Accord Touring, priced at $33,430, includes the V6 and six-speed automatic as standard equipment.

The bottom line on the window sticker for our 2013 Accord EX sedan is $26,195 including a $790 destination charge. No options are included, but the EX comes nicely equipped with a proximity key and push-button starter, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10-way power driver’s seat, 6-speaker audio with USB/aux inputs, Bluetooth handsfree, a backup camera and a moonroof. The EX also gets Honda’s new LaneWatch system, which uses a camera built into the passenger-side exterior mirror to provide better visibility and eliminate blind spots.
