1940 GMC Truck bought on Craigslist

Today I joined a friend to look at this 1940 GMC truck that was advertised for sale on Craigslist. My expectations were low, but this truck is really very nice. The body has been repainted but is in remarkable original condition given its 72-year-old age. All of the metal is straight with no filler. Some minor rust bubbles have popped […]

I Dream in Rosso Corsa: Vintage Ferrari Drive

My eyelids sprang open, and I glanced at the alarm clock hoping it was at least 5:00 AM. Unfortunately, it read 2:46. I would need more sleep, but I felt like I just slammed back an espresso doppio. 3:08…3:37…. Be still. Relax. Breathe. 3:44…4:09…. In and out of sleep now, tossing and turning. Vintage Drive: 1951 Dodge B3 “Job-Rated” Pickup

This morning, the Ormewood Park neighborhood of Atlanta probably looks a lot like it did sixty years ago. It was then, in 1951, that my neighbor Rebecca’s Dodge B3 pickup was brand-spanking new. This green and black “Pilot-House” half-ton was built when Americans were buying vehicles and suburban homes and televisions for the first time.

Thankful for Old Cars, Parents & Junkyards

Twenty-five years ago, I spent the morning and early afternoon of Thanksgiving day at a junkyard with my dad and sister. We were searching for parts for a Saab that my dad found in a parking lot and acquired at the cost of getting it home. My dad drove past the 1963 Saab 96 that was rotting in the parking […]

Some Thing Cherished

Volkswagen has a gallery of Type 181 photos recently posted on their media site, including the ones below. Children of the sixties and seventies may remember the Type 181 as The Thing. My high school classmates may recall that funny looking yellow car I drove back in the day. Oddly for inland suburban Atlanta, two of my classmates had Type […]
